Steam Jukebox

What is it?
Steam Jukebox is a collection of UK steam railway sound recordings.
Currently the collection includes 2895 individual recordings of steam locomotives working on the main line and on preserved standard and narrow gauge railways.

The recordings are supplied on CD ROM or DVD ROM, are in CD quality (128kbps) mp3 format and can be played on your PC using a software player such as Windows Media Player or iTunes or a portable mp3 player such as an iPod. In addition, many DVD players and some CD players will play mp3 disks.
Each disk includes comprehensive, illustrated notes, in Adobe Reader format, about the recordings, 270 pages included with the complete collection.

In addition, each disk comes with a free copy of Steam Jukebox Player.

So, what is Steam Jukebox Player?
Steam Jukebox Player is software provided as freeware with each collection. It is designed to help find recordings of interest more easily, display information about them and play them. It can also be used to help export recordings from the collection to portable mp3 players such as an iPod. You can download a copy of Steam Jukebox Player here. It comes with some sample recordings. Note that the sample recordings are NOT CD quality unlike the recordings supplied on disk.
A help file is provided with the programme but you can read it on the web first to get an idea of what the programme does. Read the User Guide here.

How much?
Steam Jukebox disks are priced from £8.50 for a single CD ROM containing around 150 recordings with a playing time of about 12 hours. For the equivalent of 6 CDs on a single DVD ROM the cost is £19.95. However, both can be much cheaper - CDs can work out at less than £5 and DVDs under £17.
